A box truck crashed near the White House Monday night, leading to the evacuation of at least one nearby hotel, according to officials and reports.
The truck barreled into a security barrier on the north side of Lafayette Square — across from the president’s home — shortly before 10 p.m., the Secret Service said in a statement to WUSA 9.
There were no immediate reports of injuries and the driver has been detained, the statement said.
Footage from the scene shot by the local outlet shows the vehicle appeared to be a U-Haul rental truck.
Metro DC Police confirmed the truck crash to The Post, but referred other questions to the Secret Service, which is leading the investigation.
“Shortly before 10:00 p.m. Monday, Secret Service Uniformed Division officers detained the driver of a box truck after the vehicle collided with security barriers on the north side of Lafayette Square on 16th Street,” the law enforcement agency said. “There were no injuries to any Secret Service or White House personnel and the cause and manner of the crash remain under investigation. Road closures are in effect and pedestrian walkways are closed as we investigate.”
A worker who picked up at the Hay Adams Hotel told The Post the hotel was empty around 10:30 p.m., confirming reports the hotel was evacuated.
More information surrounding the circumstances were not immediately available.
